My biggest passions are medical history and cemetery history - two subjects that often go together! Since I was young, I've always found cemeteries to be both mystifying and inviting places. Over time, I've come to see the immense value they have for our understanding of past communities. We all live and eventually, die, which makes cemeteries great starting points for learning about both an individual and the era in which they lived. Most importantly, they also give us a chance to learn about and tell the unknown stories of "common" people of all backgrounds. Old cemeteries need not be scary places to avoid; once you become familiar with them they are fascinating, tranquil places of history and lives lived.
I graduated with a BA and MA in History from McMaster University, then completed a PhD in History at the University of Saskatchewan. My first two books focused on mental trauma in the Canadian military across the twentieth century, and my current project is a book about Niagara cemeteries that I hope to have written by the end of 2020. |
